Every year in science we have to complete a study project related to the topics learned. The project is called the Individual Research Study (IRS). It's a great opportunity to grow academically because we have the chance to choose topics of interest to us and go deeper in individual research. After studying our chosen topic, we write a paper and present our findings to students in our class. As freshmen, the topic for my class was genetic mutations. I chose to research and present on Down Syndrome. During my presentation, I talked about the types, causes and symptoms of the disease, as well as solutions scientists are working on. I also shared several verses about how people with Down Syndrome are still created as special individuals and in the image of God.
Afterwards, my teacher emailed my parents telling them about my presentation and how well I did. She said that I was a natural teacher and that I would be great as an intern for her one day. I am so grateful to have such amazing teachers that take the time to compliment students and that I go to a school where I can talk about hard topics and my faith.
I have been working hard on coming out of my shyness and trying to learn to be a leader. The chance to present in front of the class was intimidating but was a chance to practice public speaking. It was also kind of God to give me a chance to see how far He has helped me come. I struggled to speak at birth and have always been rather shy. He has helped me to improve and it was so encouraging for one of my teachers who didn't know my early struggles to speak to praise me for what God has been doing in my life. My Dad and my Coach tell me that softball can give me a stage and I need to be ready. I trust God that it is right and that I will be faithful to share the most important message when I get that chance.
